Consistency Rule in Prop Firms
The consistency rule prevents a trader from reaching objectives thanks to a single exceptional day. Learn how it works and what percentages each company applies.
What is the Consistency Rule?
The consistency rule is a regulation used by many prop firms to prevent a trader from achieving objectives solely through a single exceptionally large day.
The goal is not to limit how much you can earn, but to ensure that profits are distributed relatively evenly over time, demonstrating a repeatable strategy rather than a stroke of luck.
How Does It Work?
The most common way to apply this rule is by controlling the best profit day.
Your best profit day cannot represent more than a specified percentage of the total accumulated profit.
General Formula
Consistency (%) = Best profit day ÷ Total profit
It must be less than or equal to the maximum percentage allowed by the company.
Example
- Total accumulated profit: $1,000
- Best day: $600
- Consistency = 60%
If the company has a 50% rule, consistency is not met.
What Happens if You Don't Meet It?
In most companies:
- ❌ They don't suspend your account
- ❌ It's not an automatic fail
- ✅ You simply cannot pass the phase or request a payout yet
The Solution
- Continue trading
- Generate more profit on other days
- Until that "best day" represents a smaller percentage of the total
In other words, the rule "fixes itself" with more consistency, without direct penalties.
